Complimentary benefits checks at Glacier Dental!

Along with a new year comes renewed insurance benefits. Typically dental insurance companies renew their members benefits on the first of the year, meaning if you still have insurance money available this year, you lose it next year.

Glacier Dental doesn't want to see you missing out on these paid benefits and we certainly don't want to see you put your treatment off any longer. We would be happy to schedule your exam before the end of the year, complete a complimentary insurance benefits check, and breakdown your treatment for you to use your benefits the most effective way. We can even break down your treatment plan to start treatment this year and then explain what would be best for you next year as well.

It's crucial you call soon because our schedule is booking fast and the end of the year is only 2 weeks away. We look forward to hearing from you and can't wait to ensure you and your mouth are in tip top shape!

Thanksgiving Dental Tips

Thanksgiving is just around the corner...a delicious turkey, creamy mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, cranberry relish, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, sugary drinks and more desserts! Don't get us wrong, we at the dental office indulge once in awhile too, but it's important to remember your oral health after a day of eating delicious holiday sweets.

If you're looking for a few tips on how to keep not only your smile healthy but also your waistline, consider the following.

  • Try to avoid a lot of starchy foods. These foods contain a lot of sugars which we all know are bad for our health and teeth. It's OK to have a dinner roll but try not to over indulge!
  • Sweet potatoes. A classic Thanksgiving side dish. If you can, make them yourself and avoid using marshmallows. Although sweet potatoes are delicious with the extra sweetener, it can be a sneaky sugar in your meal that you could eliminate easily.
  • If your family eats a green bean casserole, have you ever tried making it without canned soups? Eliminating these can eliminate extra carbs, sugars and high sodium intakes. Here's a recipe you can try out: http://bit.ly/1rUWqlj
  • If the first few tips are not an option, have you tried a gluten free stuffing? Trying this will also help eliminate sugars in your feast!
  • Try to drink lots of water prior to eating your Thanksgiving meal. It will help fill your tummy a little and you won't eat quite as much and you won't have to add an extra notch to your belt or slip into those Thanksgiving "fat pants" for the night.
  • Finally, when you're finished with your meal, relax with your family of course! But don't forget to brush and floss after. This will ensure any sugars that were in your Thanksgiving diet are removed from your teeth and gums and as a result plaque and build up will be eliminated.

If you're looking for more great healthy Thanksgiving recipes, we recommend thefoodnetwork.com . They have so many tasty options that you, your family and friends will love!

Here's a great plate example for a balanced Thanksgiving meal.

We are offering new patients a $19.95 cleaning, exam and x-rays and all proceeds will be going to the Oshkosh Boys and Girls club. The Boys and Girls Club serves more than 4,000 youth in Oshkosh and surrounding areas. They have provided a safe place to grow and learn for more than 45 years. Currently the are in need of board games, art supplies, musical instruments, electronics and toiletries. These donations will help the club tremendously!

The second program we have going on in office is our food drive! We are collecting as many canned goods as possible throughout the month of November and we will donate them to the local food pantry. We are also going to help them stock their shelves so anyone in need of help can have a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner! If you're in the area, please drop off any donations you may have, we truly appreciate your help!!

Canned Food Drive at Glacier Dental

Glacier Dental has started a wonderful tradition! Each year our office collects as much canned goods as possible to donate to the less fortunate around Thanksgiving.
If you have extra boxes of Mac ‘n Cheese or cans of soup that you are willing to split with, please drop them off at our office either at your next visit or when you’re on your way to town.
In 2014 we had enough food to fill four shopping carts! You would not believe the smile on the faces of the volunteers at the food pantry as well as the smiles on all the customers in need of these donations.
With a little bit of your support and Glacier Dental’s, we can help make Oshkosh an even better place to live!

  •         No embarrassing denture slipping out of your mouth when you are talking or trying to eat
  •         Less adjustments to your denture
  •        A more natural feel
  •        Preserves your bone longer since you won’t have a denture rubbing around it would just stay in place.

If you or someone you know has ill fitting dentures or has been having difficulties with dentures, call Glacier Dental and we'd be happy to set them up for a free denture consult!

Do I have to floss? Glacier Dental has a flossing alternative!

Did you know, half of all American adults have gum disease, which is the root cause of bad breath and tooth loss. To help prevent gum disease Glacier Dental recommends flossing daily, but many patients don't floss because string floss is difficult and time consuming to use.

As an alternative option, we offer patients to purchase a Waterpik, which is an easy and more effective way to floss. Simply point the flosser tip between your teeth and along the gumline and let it do the work for you. It only takes about a minute a day, which makes it easy to improve your oral health. As an added bonus, it removes plaque sitting deep between teeth and below the gumline where it's hard to reach with traditional brushing and flossing. It's shown to be 50% more effective than string floss!

Glacier Dental sells Waterpiks for $77 with a mail in rebate of $15, making the waterpik only $62. This is a great deal considering if you don't floss the consequences we can be thousands of dollars for periodontal treatment or tooth loss.

How to pick a dentist....

Here are a few good reasons

Glacier Dental is the "go-to" office!

-Same day treatment! If you're in pain, we would be happy to offer you same day treatment and take care of any problem areas before you leave.

-Crowns in one day. Yes, you read that correctly. Glacier Dental has the most up-to-date technology around, allowing the Doctors to create, design and seat a crown in one day. What does this mean? Only one visit! No need to send it out to a lab and make a follow up visit...time is valuable, why spend more than you have to at the dentist?

-Family friendly. Glacier Dental has seen patients as young as one week old! Many team members have children themselves and all are very good with children. Plus there are iPads, Netflix and toys to help make the visit even more comfortable.

-Easier payment options! There are options for everyone including paying in full for discounts or breaking payments up into smaller portions. Glacier Dental even has an in-office savings plan which is a great alternative to insurance.

-We have more than 65 5-star Google reviews! Just take a peak and see for yourself why Glacier Dental is the place to go!

Tongue Ties and Lip Ties at Glacier Dental

Glacier Dental offers a wide variety of services from routine hygiene visits to full mouth extractions and implant dentures. A unique service offered is reversal of tongue ties and lip ties. Glacier Dental was one of the first dental offices in Wisconsin to purchase a PerioLase, which is a laser used for suture free mouth surgeries. All three dentists at Glacier Dental are certified to use this laser for lip tie and tongue tie revisions.

Whether your a mom with an infant who is lip tied or an adult who is tongue tied, Glacier Dental works with any age. Dr. Steckbauer has performed this procedure on infants as little as one week old. The process is quick and the healing time is fast as well. In fact, many moms are able to breastfeed immediately after the procedure and will notice a much better latch and a happier baby!

Some dental insurance companies will cover this procedure as well as some medical insurances. We would love to do a complimentary benefits check for you at your initial consultation and if everything goes well, the procedure can be done same day as well.  Please give our office a call and we'd love to reserve a spot for you with one of our certified Doctors! 235.3251

Glacier Dental offers custom sport guards

Custom sport mouth guards are becoming more and more popular among high school and college level sports teams...some coaches are actually requiring mouth guards to be custom versus homemade mouth. Luckily, Glacier Dental has the option to make custom guards right in office. The appointment itself takes less than 30 minutes.

Why are athletic directors requiring custom guards now? There are a few different reasons. Custom guards--the same guards professional players use--allow for better breathing and in return actually enhance performance. Mouth guards also protect athletes from expensive dental bills--loss of teeth, injured jaws or even concussions from jaw injuries. Glacier Dental highly recommends custom mouth guards to keep your young athletes, whether they're on the field, court or wrestling mat, protected and safe!

Another cool feature about the guards we create in office is the color selection. We have Packer and Badger colors, as well as all the Oshkosh area school district colors. Just let us know which color you or your athlete prefers.

If you're interested in setting up an appointment for your custom mouth guard, please call 235.3251 as space is limited. And if you call today, you'll receive an extra gift at your visit! We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Wisdom Teeth Extractions at Glacier Dental

Glacier Dental offers a wide variety of services from general cleanings to implants, dentures and oral surgery. We understand patients are hesitant to go to the Dentist the way it is and when you have to be referred out of your regular dental office to have treatment taken care of, the treatment can easily be put on the back burner due to nerves.

If you come in for your routine cleaning and explain you're having trouble with some wisdom teeth, it's possible we could extract those teeth right there that day or even a different day that week. We want to make sure you're out of pain and happy before leaving the office.

What does this all mean? One visit for you from one Doctor. It's so much easier than calling another clinic, working out your schedules and getting up the courage to meet a brand new doctor and clinical staff.

If you're simply looking to get out of pain feel free to call Glacier Dental and set up a wisdom tooth or extraction consult with one of our three oral surgeons, Dr. Steckbauer, Dr. Carpenter or Dr. Wozniak. At this visit we would explain the treatment and go over any payment options you may need. We will also do a complimentary benefits check and give you an estimated patient portion. Call today and meet your one-stop shop dental clinic!

Let us make your dental insurance plan easy!

If you have dental insurance that you don't quite understand let us do the work! Once you come in for your appointment, our insurance coordinator will complete a complimentary benefits check for you and look into your insurance benefit plan. This way if you need any sort of treatment, or if you're interested in knowing what your preventative benefits are, we can go over them with you.

Insurance benefits can be a little intimidating, but our trained front office professionals make it easy! Any questions you may have, they will be able to answer. They also try their best to let you know what the estimated insurance coverage for specific procedures (such as a crown or implant), so you have an idea of what the patient portion might be.

Understanding your insurance has never been so easy when you work with Glacier Dental. Give us a call for your complimentary benefits check! 235.3251

Glacier Dental Experience

From the moment you pick up the phone to call Glacier Dental to the minute you leave the practice after your appointment, you are sure to be WOWed!

Glacier Dental takes our patients' experience very seriously whether you are a new patient or existing patient. We want each patient to have a memorable, relaxing and comfortable visit.

What separates Glacier Dental from the rest? Not only are we the "one stop shop" and offer same day treatment, sedation dentistry, crowns in one day and implants (just to name a few), we continually have amazing giveaways in office. Just recently a patient won a set of His and Her Schwinn bikes! Just in time for summer. We've also given away trips to Mexico and Caribbean cruises! Patients entered into these drawings simply told their family and friends about their amazing Glacier Dental experience and referred them our way.

We also work with each patient individually to meet their expectations, whether they fear the dentist, have a trust concern, cosmetic concern or budget concern. We want everyone to be happy and start treatment at a pace that best suits them.

Each one of our clinical team members has a gentle touch and is very caring and understanding. We would be happy to set up a consultation for you and let you meet the Glacier Dental family and show you around our state of the art office.

An affordable way for small businesses to offer employees Dental Benefits

Sometimes small business owners find it hard to offer their employees decent dental insurance for a reasonable cost. Glacier Dental has a great dental insurance alternative, it's our in-office dental savings plan. This is a great option for business owners to purchase a full year's worth of cleanings, exams and x-rays for their employees for just $350....total. As an added benefit for the employees, any treatment they may need, if they pay for it in full they will receive 10% off.

Glacier Dental also offers a family plan if employers choose to give benefits to their employees immediate family. This plan is good for families of four (if there are additional family members, individual plans can be purchased in addition). The family plan is a total of $1300 ($325/person). The 10% off treatment if paid in full also applies. In addition, any family members under age 14 will receive fluoride varnish free of charge.

As another added bonus to having two continuous care appointments, all necessary x-rays and exams, each patient who is enrolled in the in-office savings plan will receive one free emergency exam as well. This exam can be used anytime throughout the year for emergencies that cannot wait until the next continuous care appointment.

The in-office savings plan cannot be combined with dental insurance however, this plan can help patients without traditional dental insurance save over 30%. Please give our office a call if you're interested in getting more information to give your employees the best dental opportunity in town!

Laser Gum Surgery...who needs it?

At Glacier Dental we are leaders in technology because we are the only general dentist in the area to have a cone beam (3D x-ray), the first in Wisconsin to get an E4D machine (makes crowns in 1 day!) , and one of the first offices in Wisconsin to have a periolase (used for gum surgery).

To start out, what is laser gum surgery?

LANAP, better known as laser gum surgery, is used to help reduce periodontitis, which is an infection of the gums. According to Millennium Dental Technology's website, "The laser fiber, which is only about as wide as three human hairs, is inserted between the gum tissue and your tooth, where it painlessly removes the [harmful] elements that cause gum disease".

Often times, patient's who have very "loose" teeth need to have LANAP surgery. After the treatment, the patient's gums will actually start to reattach to the bone around them, in return reducing gum pocket size. Patients who are recommended to have LANAP usually have gum pocket sizes of 8mm+, and they should be somewhere between 1-3mm. After LANAP, the patient can usually expect to have smaller pocket sizes as long as post-ops are followed. Smaller pocket sizes means less chances for getting bacteria and disease in the gums.

Why is using the periolase better for the treatment of gum disease?

  • There is no cutting and no stitches involved.
  • There is much less discomfort with laser gum surgery than with standard surgery- during and after the procedure.
  • It gives better, long-lasting results.
  • The procedure takes less time than traditional surgery and there is less recovery time so you don’t have to miss extra time from work.
  • Laser gum surgery is safe for individuals with health concerns such as diabetes and those taking medications such as Plavix or aspirin.
  • Saves teeth from extractions.
LANAP Diagram
Above is an animation of what the periolase looks like when used on some gum tissue. Picture A shows the laser between the tooth and the gum, picture G shows the gums reattached to the bone and tooth.

If you or someone you know needs laser gum surgery, please call our office for a consultation! 920-235-3251.

Are metal fillings bad for you?

At Glacier Dental we are here for you and want you to have a beautiful, healthy smile. We offer whitening, ClearCorrect (invisible braces), and removal of amalgam fillings and metal crowns.

Many people request that we remove their amalgam fillings and metal crowns, but why does that matter to you? Here's a few reasons:

  • Amalgam fillings contain mercury, which isn't something you want in your body. We use an isolite system to remove amalgam, keeping you safe during the removal.
  • Amalgam fillings aren't sealed up like a tooth colored filling, causing them to leak on the edges. From our experience every amalgam we have removed has had some type of decay show up around it.
  • Amalgam fillings and metal crowns don't allow the doctors to see through them on x-rays, making decay hard to see.
  • Amalgam fillings expand and contract which allows them to break over time and crack or fracture the tooth remaining there...meaning you will need more treatment.
  • Amalgams and metal crowns just aren't pretty! They do not mimic your tooth's natural color.

If you are someone you know is ready to get their silver fillings and crowns removed, or if you see someone cover their mouth when they laugh/smile because of the silver or gold, give us a call! We would be happy to help!

Grind your teeth? Here are some options to help you!

Bruxism, TMJ and TMD are all terms for clenching and grinding your teeth. Typically this happens when one is sleeping, and it can cause serious harm to teeth. Grinding and clenching can also cause severe headaches, but what options are out there to help prevent these issues? Glacier Dental has a few different options that range in price and procedure.

Aqualizer
The least expensive option is also a temporary option and it is call an aqualizer. This is a small plastic piece that is not custom made, but fits most adult mouths. It covers the back molars, this way the teeth do not touch when the mouth is closed. Since the teeth are not touching, grinding is less likely. It is not recommended for patients that are heavy clenchers and as stated previously, it really is only a temporary fix for patients who are either waiting to receive other dental work first or saving for a night guard.

NTI-tss

The second night guard option Glacier Dental recommends to several patients is call an NTI-tss night guard, or NTI for short. This is a custom device in which patients wear to bed to help prevent grinding and it clicks in place on the lower jaw. It can also reduce clenching and in return reduce major headaches. It also protects your teeth from wear and if you have had any cosmetic work done on your front teeth, it protects that work from breaking or chipping as well. The NTI process does not involve any numbing, shots or surgery and it can be made in-office in just one visit! It is a great option that will last much longer than an aqualizer.

Often times we hear patients do not like to wear devices to bed, so the final option Glacier Dental likes to offer is Botox. Botox is made up of a purified protein and is used to help relax jaw muscles. It is a non-invasive procedure and takes minutes to do in office. It does not require being numb and the best part is, you do not have to wear a nightguard to bed! According to the American Academy of Facial Esthetics (AAFE), after the Botox is placed in the large muscle that moves the jaw, "the muscle is weakened enough to stop involuntary grinding of the teeth and clenching of the jaw". In return, the muscle is relaxed and clenching and grinding is reduced along with migraines. The AAFE also notes, "voluntary movements, such as chewing and facial expressions, are not affected at all by botox."

Call today to schedule your grinding/clenching consultation and one of our Doctors will help find the best treatment for you! 920.235.3251

No insurance? No problem! Check out Glacier Dental's in-office savings plan!

Glacier Dental's In-office Savings Plan

Often times, patients without insurance find it harder to get to the dentist for regular check-ups because budget is a concern. With Glacier Dental's in office savings plan, budget no longer needs to be a concern. Here's how it works!

There are three different parts to the savings plan: Individual, Family or Periodontal Maintenance. The individual plan is a total of $350 which is a savings of $216! This plan includes two continued care appointments, two periodic exams, one limited exam, four bitewing x-rays, and three periapical x-rays. In a nutshell, this includes two full cleanings and exams and one emergency exam. The cost is unbeatable!

The second option is the family plan. The cost is $1300, a savings of $1340. It is for a family for four family members (dependents up to age 21). The plan is essentially the same as the individual plan, but each family member will receive two continued care appointments, two periodic exams, one limited exam, four bitewing x-rays, and three periapical x-rays.

And the third option, periodontal maintenance, is a fee of $650 which is a $439 savings. This plan includes four perio-maintenance appointments, two periodic exams, one limited exam, four bitewings, three periapical x-rays, and two fluoride treatments. It is an excellent deal for anyone who has had LANAP or scaling and root planing done, and is on a tight budget.

As an added bonus, with each of these plans include an additional 10% off treatment, sealants and fluoride if paid in full! Also, with the individual plan and the family plan, fluoride is free of charge for patients under the age of 14.

These plans cannot be combined with insurance, but with the rates that they are at, there is no need! If you have any questions or would like to sign up for these plans, please call 920.235.3251

Are cavities contagious?

Yes! Tooth decay is indeed contagious. Because there is bacteria in the tooth decay, it can be passed between people, similar to a bad cold.

Sugar is a big culprit for causing cavities, but they're also caused by certain types of bacteria. These bacterias release acids that break down the hard enamel on the outside of the teeth causing holes, better known as cavities. This bacteria can easily be passed by kissing, sharing food or even sharing silverware.

Another interesting fact, children are not just born with cavities. More often than not, cavities are passed to them from their parents or care givers. As long as the mom or dad have good oral health, their children should have good oral health too.

There are ways to avoid passing cavities from one to another, for example, if you drop a pacifier, do not put it in your mouth to clean it off and then place it in your child's mouth. Rather go to a restroom to clean it. A few more ways include avoiding sharing utensils, avoid kissing baby's lips, not sharing tooth brushes or even avoid pre-chewing food for youngsters if you do not have proper utensils to prepare it.

The best way to avoid cavities is by practicing good oral health. Brushing and flossing at least two times a day, and if you eat more acidic food adding an extra brushing afterward wouldn't hurt. Keep these tips in mind to help your children practice good oral health too!

Sensitive tooth after treatment?

Sometimes patients have sensitivity after having a filling or a crown done and we want you to know this is normal. Once the treatment is completed, the patient is asked if everything feels normal. Since patients are typically numb, it can be hard to tell if the bite feels normal or natural. To help combat this the Doctor always uses a bite marking piece of paper to be sure your bite is normal. However, sometimes it takes for the numbing to wear off before the patient notices it doesn't feel right and they're having sensitivity in that area. This means the patient needs to come back for an adjustment on that tooth to make sure the filling isn't too high, causing aching.

If several adjustments are made and the tooth is still causing sensitivity there may be something else going on with the tooth. Sometimes if a really large filling was placed, the tooth may actually need a crown. If a crown was placed, an x-ray may need to be taken to make sure the tooth is healthy. If the tooth is not healthy, it may need a root canal. Prior to recommending a root canal, Glacier Dental will try/recommend other options to help with the sensitivity.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity after an appointment, please do not hesitate to call our office at 920-235-3251 for a free adjustment appointment. We want to be sure you are as comfortable as possible!

Why Glacier Dental recommends sealants!

Sealants are often recommended to young children to help prevent cavities. A sealant is a plastic material used to cover the surface of a tooth to help fill in the grooves. They are considered preventative care because the plastic seal prevents food from getting stuck in deep grooves and causing cavities. The reason they are more often recommended to children is to help protect their teeth right away.

However, sealants are also highly recommended for adults who do not have them on their molars. If you're prone to getting cavities, sealants are a great way to help reduce that risk.  The biggest downfall to getting sealants later on in life, is the fact that insurances typically will not cover them if you are over the age of 14, but they are an inexpensive procedure. It is more cost effective to seal your teeth now, than pay for a filling down the road.

Sealants are a pain-free procedure and are applied to the teeth very quickly. Below is an image of how the Doctor or hygienist applies the sealant.

Once the sealant is placed, it can usually last for a few years, some people several years. It is important to remember, however, sealants do not stop teeth from decaying, it helps prevent decay. It is still very important to brush two times a day and floss at least once a day. Next time you're in, ask the Doctor or Hygienist if you have any teeth that they would recommend a sealant on, your teeth are worth it!

Are E-Cigarettes better for your smile?

To start out, e-cigarettes still contain nicotine, which we all know isn't good for our overall health. But what exactly does the nicotine do? It restricts blood vessels and increases risk for periodontal disease.

What does all that jargon mean? Everyone has white blood cells that "eat bacteria" and reduce the bad bacterial levels (which is a very good thing!). If blood vessels are restricted, causing less blood flow, these white blood cells are unable to do their job of reducing bad bacteria. As a result, gingivitis may occur which can lead to a more progressed inflammation and redness of gums, also known as periodontal disease. According to National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research." In periodontitis, gums pull away from the teeth and form spaces (called “pockets”) that become infected." If not treated, teeth may become loose and fall out.

If you're curious as to whether or not it's worth switching to e-cigs from regular cigarettes, the answer may not be clear. There hasn't been enough research to say whether or not it's much healthier, but here are a few facts.

E-cigs do not has as much of an effect on recovery processes as opposed to regular cigarettes, however they still do have some effect. According to WebMD, "The biggest danger from tobacco is the smoke, and e-cigarettes don't burn. Tests show the levels of dangerous chemicals they give off are a fraction of what you'd get from a real cigarette."

Although e-cigarettes are not as "harsh" as regular cigarettes, they can still be harmful to your body and your smile, so use them as a "bridge" to help you quit, if you plan to quit eventually, but we wouldn't recommend just switching to them as an alternative or starting to use them for "fun" if you're not a smoker already.

What's better electric tooth brush or manual?

There truly is no correct answer to what is better, an electric toothbrush or a manual, simply because if you don't use it, it won't work. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, "The best toothbrush is the one you will actually use." But let's explore the pros and cons of each, and maybe it will help you decide what's best for you!

Of course the Phillips Sonicare DiamondClean toothbrush is excellent, several of Glacier Dental's patients have purchased these and absolutely love them. There are five different brushing settings and each have their own benefits. Sonicare toothbrushes are proven to remove 7x more plaque than a manual toothbrush and can improve gum health in just two weeks. They're also used to whiten teeth in one week by removing surface stains. In addition, this automatic tooth brush has a built in timer and will shut off after two minutes (the proper brush time).

As nice and convenient electric tooth brushes they do have downfalls, just like everything else. The initial cost of an electric toothbrush can be pricey but the benefits of the toothbrush will definitely pay off! Also, you only have to pay that fee once, and the toothbrush heads are removable so more than one person can use the toothbrush. The other downfall is it does need to be charged, however, the DiamondClean can keep a full charge for over a week. It also can be charged with a wall plug-in or a USB plug-in for travel.

Now electric toothbrushes are great, but if you're not going to use it, it's useless. Manual toothbrushes also have many benefits. They're cost effective (especially if you get a free one at your six month check up!), they're easy for traveling, and they're easy for children. The problem is, two minutes of brush time is a lot easier to measure with an electric toothbrush than a manual. So brush time can be reduced by accident. Also, sometimes the toothbrush heads can be too big and proper brushing is not practiced.

In all reality, whatever toothbrush you are actually going to use, is going to be the recommended one. An electric toothbrush (if you purchase the right one, Sonicare brand is highly recommended) will have more benefits over a manual toothbrush, simply because it can remove more plaque, but a manual toothbrush can get the job done too!
