What are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt
in your mouth and are the teeth least needed for good oral health. More often
than not, most patients have four wisdom teeth that erupt through the gums
in their late teens or early twenties. However, sometimes wisdom teeth can
remain trapped in the jawbone under the gums because there is insufficient room
for them to erupt. No matter the case, if one of our doctors see fit, these teeth can
be removed right here at Glacier Dental.
Why do I want my wisdom teeth removed?
Sometimes the question occurs, “why should
I have my wisdom teeth removed if they don’t hurt?” Wisdom teeth can cause gum
disease, crowding or other damage to adjacent teeth, decay (due to the
inability of your toothbrush to keep the area clean) and even bone loss. Pain
and swelling are the most common symptoms of problem wisdom teeth but whether
you have obvious symptoms or not, it is important to diagnose existing or
potential problems caused by your wisdom teeth. Removal is often the wisest
decision for your health and well-being.
4 Things Wisdom Teeth Removal helps prevent:
- crowding of back teeth: may result in shifting of all teeth
- a tooth becoming stuck in the jaw (impacted): never breaking through the gums.
- painful, red, swollen gums: due to flap of skin around wisdom tooth that has only partially come in.
- tooth decay and GUM DISEASE: wisdom and surrounding teeth may be more difficult to clean.
