Is There a Stronger Love/Hate Relationship?

Dental Floss. If you work in the dental field, chances are you love it! There is also a good chance if you are a patient you hate it- and you are not alone.

Using dental floss is difficult for some people. For one thing, you have to be very consistent in using it for it to be effective. Even if you do use it regularly:

  • Are you able to fit your hand in your mouth to get the back teeth?
  • Are you able to maneuver it under the gumline?
  • Are you applying enough pressure to remove plaque from your tooth?
  • Are you applying too much pressure and injuring the tissue?
All of these things help talk ourselves into not even doing it. However, if you skip the process all together you are missing over 35 % of your tooth surface. 35 % of the tooth surface goes untouched by simply brushing alone making flossing just as important in your at home care routine.

Oh, did I mention the pain from twisting the floss around your finger 100 times!

If you are someone who can relate to the above we may have just the solution for you!

One of the items our clinical team recommends to nearly every patient is a Waterpik Water Flosser. Clinical studies show that the Water Flosser is up to:

  • 51% more effective in reducing gingivitis(gum disease) than dental floss
  • 2x as effective in reducing gingival bleeding than dental floss
  • 29% more effective removing plaque(what can cause gum disease) than dental floss

A Water Flosser is a handheld device that sprays a stream of water to remove food from between teeth. If you have had any dental work completed, that makes it difficult to floss, such as braces, fixed or permanent bridges or crowns- you may find that a Water Pik is the right choice for you.

Change the way you view flossing and turn it into a quick easy part of your dental at home care routine with a Water Pik!

Children's Dental Tips!

Did you know that it is recommended that children have a dental exam by the time they are 1 year old or within the first six months of their first tooth eruption?

It is important to have your child's teeth and gums checked every six months to help prevent cavities and any other dental problems that may occur. When most of his or her baby teeth arrive they will be ready for their first dental cleaning with a hygienist, typically between 12-36 months.

Preparing your child for their first cleaning appointment is so important. Help them understand the importance of going to the dentist. Explain to them what the dentist will do with non-threatening words appropriate for their age. Keeping it simple will help your child to be calmer. Inform them how the doctor will be looking at their teeth, counting them, and checking to make sure they are healthy.

Children want to grow up to be just like their parents so it is important for you, the parent, to lead by example and show them at a young age why it is important to keep their teeth and gums healthy.

Please check out the link below from Colgate, one of our preferred vendors, for some fun tips on how to make dental hygiene fun for kids.
