Ever wonder how so many famous people seem to have the perfect smile? They're changing them, and you can too with veneers!
A veneer is a thin porcelain or composite resin material that covers your natural tooth. Think of it like the thin layer on a piece of furniture that gives it the look of natural wood. . It can mask discolorations, brighten teeth, and generally improve your smile.
Brighten Your Teeth
Over time, teeth become darker internally and wear down externally, making them appear even darker.
Many things may cause discoloration:
- Smoking, coffee, tea, red wine, certain antibiotics
A Better Looking Smile
Veneers are used to change a tooth’s color, size, or shape. They are able to mask teeth that may be stained or chipped. Veneers can also be used to fill in an unwanted gap between the two front teeth.
According to a consumer study conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), a new smile can make you appear more attractive, more successful, and even more intelligent. The AACD survey found that the first things people notice about someone’s smile include:
- Straightness, whiteness or color of teeth, sincerity of smile, if teeth are missing, and the sparkle of the smile.
Here's What to Expect
Whether having a veneer applied to a single tooth or a series of teeth the process may take up to three appointments. The first would be the consultation to discuss the treatment plan, preparing the tooth and bonding.
To prep the tooth the dentist will buff and reshape it to allow for the covering to fit correctly. This step may require you to be numb. Once the tooth is prepped a mold of the tooth is sent to the lab where your custom veneers is made just for you. The veneer is then bonded to the tooth with an adhesive material and a light beam used to harden the material. With the proper care such as regular brushing and flossing, avoiding foods and beverages that may discolor your smile the veneer should last for years to come. The replacement of veneers differs for each individual and your dentist will make that recommendation when the time is right.
